December 1st is world AIDS day
Doctor's advice /
At Sanitas, we commemorate the significant strides in treating Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) over the last four decades. In 1981, five young men in the Los Angeles area, who were previously healthy, were reported to have complications in their immune system, which marked the first official case of what later became known as the AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) epidemic. As we commemorate this day, we want to stress the importance of screening for HIV. The CDC recommends everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 should get tested for HIV at least once as a part of routine health care, and more often if you engage in risky behaviors that increase your chance of getting HIV. These risk factors include unprotected sex with multiple partners, sharing needles, syringes, or other drug injections, piercing or tattoo equipment, nondisclosure of HIV infection status to a sexual partner, having another sexually transmitted infection(STI), and blood transfusions.
In Broward County, where Sanitas currently has 7 locations and is slotted for another two locations to open in 2024 in Tamarac and Oakland Park, the rate of HIV diagnosis is higher than the national average. Regular testing is essential to ensure early detection and timely treatment. At Sanitas, we offer comprehensive HIV screening services to our patients. Our screening tests are quick, easy, and confidential, and we provide counseling services to help individuals understand their test results. We also have a range of resources available to our patients to ensure a seamless care experience. This includes access to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PREP) and post-exposure prophylaxis treatments with the assistance of our Florida Blue insurance partners. Additionally, we make screening more effortless and efficient by offering on-site laboratory testing, as well as access to our on-demand Virtual Medical Center to assist with questions.
Our team of medical professionals at Sanitas are dedicated to providing compassionate care and support to those living with HIV, and we work closely with community organizations to connect our patients with additional resources and services. With proper medical care, in 2023, HIV can be effectively managed. People living with HIV who receive adequate treatment can lead long, healthy lives and protect their partners, getting the virus under control within six months. Taking HIV antiviral medications as prescribed will help maintain a low viral load, and could lead to where the virus can become undetectable. On this World AIDS Day, let us remember the importance of HIV screening and the significant strides made in the treatment of this virus. Knowing one’s status brings calm and confidence to life. Use our services, get tested, and take the step today!
