What is prostate cancer and what are the warning signs?

The Cancer disease occurs when cells in the body start to reproduce out of control. Cells in almost any part of the body can turn into cancer cells and sometimes can spread to other areas of the body, causing metastasis.

In men, one type of cancer that they can develop is prostate cancer. The prostate is a gland that only men have, which produces part of the fluid in the semen. Prostate cancer starts when cells in the prostate start to grow out of control. It is one of the most common cancers among men in the United States according to the CDC.

Some of the early symptoms and signs of prostate cancer are:

  • Blood in semen
  • Trouble and pain when urinating
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Discomfort when sitting
  • Trouble getting an erection
  • Among others

It is important to get informed and understand the risk factors that can lead a man to suffer from prostate cancer, in order to prevent this disease. The chance of developing prostate cancer increases significantly after age 50. Also, in some cases there may be a hereditary or genetic factor.

Prostate cancer can be found as a result of screening. Among the types of tests that are performed to find out if you have prostate cancer are the prostate-specific antigen blood test (PSA), or a digital rectal exam (DRE). It is recommended that you have regular prostate cancer screenings, and these tests should be done even before you have any symptoms; in this way if you have cancer, you can receive adequate treatment in time. If your tests turn out to be abnormal, you may need more tests, such as an ultrasound, a biopsy, or MRI.

Talk with your doctor, if you're concerned about your risk of developing prostate cancer. A test in time, and treatment can make a big difference in your health.
